DNA TESTING ON "THE BEST OF TIMES RADIO TALK SHOW"

Click on the image below to hear the recording (without advertisements) of today’s “Best of Times Radio Talk Show”.  Host Gary Calligas invited me to come and talk about using DNA testing in genealogy research.  I believe that the show went very well.  Listen to the show and let me know what you think.  Feel free to let people know about the show and post the link on your blog or website and FaceBook.

ANCESTRYDNA WITH AND WITHOUT AN ANCESTRY SUBSCRIPTION

For some time I have been trying to find an answer to how to be able to fully access only DNA results on Ancestry without having to pay for a full subscription to the Ancestry database (which costs $189 to $389 depending the level of access).  I have discovered a webpage on Ancestry support that shows how this can be accomplished.  Click on the screenshot below to go to the webpage which will explain the access for "Registered Guests" which is free, "DNA Insights Subscription" which is $49 annually, and a "Subscribed Member" which ranges from $189 to $389.

The Insights Subscription will give you full access to the AncestryDNA information but you must call Ancestry directly at 1-800-401-1601 and ask for the Insights Subscription.  This subscription is not available online, only by calling.

DNA INTEREST GROUP SEPTEMBER MEETING

HOW TO TRANSFER YOUR DNA RAW DATA TO ANOTHER SITE

During my DNA presentations and at the DNA Interest Group, I encourage AncestryDNA and FTDNA testers to transfer their DNA raw data to the third party site GEDMATCH.com.  There is no cost to this transfer - it is absolutely free!  Also when you transfer to GEDMATCH you will have additional tools available to analyze your test results and your DNA will be compared to an different database which will result in new DNA cousin matches.  This is an easy task to complete this transfer - but sometimes it is easy to get confused about how to do it.  I have have compiled instructions on how to make this transfer of either AncestryDNA or FTDNA to GEDMATCH from information on their websites.  Click on the link below that applies to what you want to do to download a pdf file of the instructions:
Ancestry.com DNA upload to GEDMATCH
FTDNA upload to GEDMATCH

Also, if you have tested with Ancestry and would like to transfer your DNA to FTDNA to compare to the testers in their data base and utilize their tools to analyze your test results, the instructions for doing this can be found by clicking on the link below.
Ancestry.com DNA upload to FTDNA
NOTE! THE TRANSFER OF ANCESTRY TO FTDNA IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR ANCESTRY KITS THAT WERE COMPLETED AFTER  APRIL 2016.  IF THIS CHANGES I WILL POST ON THIS BLOG
This is "FREE" transfer, but to utilize the tools and be able to communicate with your matches, there is a one time fee of $39.

If you have any questions please email me or comment on this post.

Happy DNA cousin hunting.

ANCESTRY DNA RESULTS WITH AND WITHOUT AN ANCESTRY SUBSCRIPTION

Good news came by way of E-mail today!

The Legal Genealogist, Judy Russell provided information on her blog today that provided the answer to a question that I have searched for many times.  How do you access all of the great DNA tools that Ancestry provides without subscribing to access all of Ancestry records, which cost $189 to $389 per year depending on the type of access they offer?  The Free Registered Guest account only lets one have limited access to the DNA results.  There is a DNA Insights Subscriptions for only $49 per year that allows full access to your DNA results and use of all of the great DNA tools on Ancestry but no access to Ancestry records.  You can find more detailed information HERE about each of these choices.  Ancestry does not tell you much about the Insight Subscription unless you call, and you cannot order it online you must call them at 1-800-401-1601.

We will go over this in more detail tomorrow at our DNA Interest Group Meeting.

Happy DNA cousin hunting.
